Gentile refers to non-Israelites, and collectively designates the peoples and nations as distinct from the Israelite people. The term is sometimes used as a translation of the Hebrew word gôy ([Strong's #1471]) in the King James Version of the Bible (cf. Gen 10:5; Isa 11:10; 42:1,6; 49:6,22; 54:3; 60:3,5; 60:11,16; 61:6,61:9; 62:2; 66:12,66:19; Jer 4:7; 14:22; 16:19; 46:1; Lam 2:9; Eze 4:13; Hos 8:8; Joe 3:9; Mic 5:8; Zec 1:21; Mal 1:11). In the New Testament the Greek word ethnos ([Strong's #1484]) is used more specifically to indicate non-Jews.
