:: Thanks. The English word order in Ex 20.17 is much the same as the Hebrew, doesn't it seem highly contrived to edit out of the middle of the 10th command a clause to fashion a 9th and reassemble the rest to make a 10th, for the express and documented purpose of obscuring the second? The second command's warning against idolatry is treated distinctly from polytheism in scripture, 1 Co.10.14, Ga 5.20, 1 Jo 5.21, Rev 21.8 etc. The reasons behind the textual shift from Exodus to Deuteronomy are interesting but perhaps not suitable for a general encyclopaedia, though the highly problematic nature of Rome's attempted exculpation by splitting the 10th most surely is.

How about giving the actual word order in Exodus as the Protestant version, since in other respects you are already quoting that text, i.e.  'You shall not covet your neighbour’s house, you shall not covet your neighbour’s wife, etc.'? --[[User:Cpsoper|charles soper]] 15:37, 17 March 2010 (UTC)

Why the vague and dangerous indifference to alternative numberings? The Hebrew word order of the 10th command in Exodus 20.17, 'Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s wife', makes plain that separating it into two commands is a fiction designed only by those who desire to obscure the second, following the iconolatrous 7th council at Nicaea, as the Roman Catholic catechism does egregiously [1]. Why not make explicit the Biblical case for the numbering? --charles soper 20:40, 12 March 2010 (UTC)

You make a valid point, Charles. My intent was not be indifferent to the alternate numberings, but merely to note that they exist. My knowledge of Hebrew is insufficient to make it plain that separating Exodus 20:17 or Deuteronomy 5:21 is a fiction, and my knowledge of church history is insufficient to explain why this fiction persists in both the Hebrew and Catholic traditions. I hope that someone else can explain why the other numberings are in error. I dont care if it rains or freezes 21:11, 12 March 2010 (UTC)
