catholic: (little-c) The Universal Church also known as the Church Militant. This is the "one holy catholic church" referred to in the Apostles' Creed and Nicene Creed. Some people feel this church has not existed since the Great Schism of 1054.

Catholic: (Big-C) The Roman Catholic Church, as opposed to the Eastern Orthodox Church.
