Talk:Libertarian free will

This sentence...

Libertarian freedom is, therefore, the freedom to act contrary to one's nature, predisposition and greatest desires. Responsibility, in this view, always means that one could have done otherwise.

...sounds like it came from a Calvinist. I have never read, nor can I ever imagine a proponent of Libertarian Freedom giving a definition like that. A more typical and common definition is something like:

Libertarian freedom is, therefore, the freedom to act according to our choices, and with the ability to have chosen otherwise. There are no internal or external causes which determines our choices.

What do you guys think? JordanBarrett 14:17, 17 Sep 2005 (EDT)

You ask the question like it is bad to be stated like a Calvinist. Ha ha! Seriously though, it is stated to emphasize the weakness of the view (like a Calvinist would). To state the position without pointing out that this means "contrary to one's nature" is to soft pedal it. But that's just my $0.02. Gomarus 15:33, 19 Sep 2005 (EDT)
I know I said I'd be gone, but I'll jump on for a second. ;) I do think it's bad to start it off like a Calvinist. This is kind of like the Mormonism article. Represent it like they would, but then represent it as it actually stands. For instance, put something like "Those who defend Libertarian freedom would define it as such... however, the weakness is that..." Something like this. Otherwise it looks as though you are misrepresenting the Arminian. Even if there definition is weak, it should be stated - to be fair, clear, correct, etc... That is also just my $0.02.

Before we use this quote we need the full reference (basically the page #)

Usually when the term "free will" is encountered in theological framework, it is the Libertarian free will that is in view. As R. C. Sproul has said, “Probably the most common definition says free will is the ability to make choices without any prior prejudice, inclination, or disposition.” (Chosen By God) JordanBarrett (talk) 17:12, 27 January 2006 (EST)
