Evangelical Anglican
What exactly is an Evangelical Anglican? The Anglicanism article is too brief on this topic, but the two terms seem to be somewhat opposing as if you embraced one you would have to water-down the other to some extent. JordanBarrett 11:43, 17 January 2006 (EST)
- The two modifiers are not intended to sound opposing, although there are Anglicans who would not be considered "evangelical," especially the brand of "high-church" Anglican that rejects the 39-Articles and seeks communion with Rome -- for which see reference to "liberal Anglo-Catholic" in Anglicanism. I'll try to reword it a little. Gomarus 12:14, 17 January 2006 (EST)
- No need to reword it, but either way. I have just been hearing that term lately - "evangelical anglican" - and I am trying to understand more clearly what makes someone just and Anglican, just an evangelical, and yet both at the same time. JordanBarrett 12:25, 17 January 2006 (EST)
I go to St Johns Shaughnessy and we call ourselves Evangelical. Dr. Packer is a member and when I took a course from him at Regent, he taught from Louis Berkhof's Systematic Theology which is strongly in the Reform Tradition. St. John's subscribes to the complete list in Theopedia's Evangelicalism definition:
- an orthodox Christology and emphasis on Christ's atoning work and bodily Resurrection;
- the belief that salvation is the result of God's grace through Christ rather than any human works;
- the authority and inspiration of Scripture, usually holding to the inerrancy of the original autographs;
- an emphasis on biblical preaching and teaching;
- an emphasis on the conversion experience, typically referred to as being "born again" or experiencing a "new birth";
- and an emphasis on evangelism and the importance of mission work.
John Stott (now Commander of the British Empire) who has preached at St. John's, though rarely) is the acknowledged leader of the Evangelical movement within Anglicanism, so you can look up his beliefs as well. I guess it was the Lutherans that invented the term Evangelical, but I don't think they own it, so I think it is fair for our branch of Anglicanism to use it. Mike Mrd 17:47, 17 January 2006 (EST)
