Talk:Christianity
From Theopedia
Hrmm... shouldn't this page have its own article? -Aaronshaf 02:51, 13 March 2006 (EST)
- Yes, I think so. I would be willing to take the Wikipedia article Christianity and edit it down for a starting point in Theopedia. I also think our Theopedia article can remain more concise than Wikipedia, avoiding some spurious material, and referring to other main articles like Orthodoxy, Essential doctrines, Church history, etc. -- Jim, aka Gomarus

How do we want this article to look? A brief explanation of where Christianity came from? Doctrines? etc. I imagine this will house a load of links to various pages, but before we get going I think it'd be good to agree on where we start and how we want it to look. - Looking at Mrd's reference to defending "the Faith," I first thought that an article on Christianity would suffice. But I do not want to be hastey, and maybe this too should be discussed. In defending (or defining) "the Christian Faith," we are speaking of the Faith objectively as in Col. 2:6-8, 1 Cor. 16:13, and Jude 1:3, not subjectively as in a person's faith in Christ. In the objective sense we are speaking of the "content" of the Christian faith. Now, is an article on "Christianity" the place to describe the content of the Christian Faith? Perhaps so. In any event, in my estimation, the Christian Faith objectively may be defined as the teaching of the Bible as summarized in the Apostles' Creed, the Nicene Creed and the Athanasian Creed. But these are just my first thoughts. Hehe! Gomarus 09:02, 24 April 2006 (PDT)
- I think those are some great thoughts. Let continue to work this out more. JordanBarrett (talk) 09:40, 24 April 2006 (PDT)
Intro
Proposed changes are in bold. What about saying, "Christianity is a montheistic faith, thus believing in one God , and is based on the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ as presented in the New Testament Scriptures." Maybe that makes the sentence too wordy and broken up, but saying "Christianity is a monotheistic faith in God" sounds a little weird to me. Not weird enough that we have to change it, though. :) JordanBarrett (talk) 12:00, 24 April 2006 (PDT)
- Would it sound better to say merely "a monotheistic faith" or would it be better to try something without the word "monotheistic"? I didn't like the Wikipedia intro which reads: "Christianity is a monotheistic religion centered on Jesus of Nazareth, known by Christians as Jesus Christ, and New Testament accounts of his life and teachings." Gomarus 12:12, 24 April 2006 (PDT)
- Yeah, I don't like it either. I think "a monotheistic faith" sounds better. JordanBarrett (talk) 13:17, 24 April 2006 (PDT)
Quote by Lewis
I would love to integrate this quote in somewhere, somehow.
- "Christianity, if false, is of no importance, and if true, of infinite importance. The only thing it cannot be is moderately important" (C.S. Lewis).

- Great quote. :-) Gomarus 17:05, 24 April 2006 (PDT)

I'm assuming that, instead of a list of basic doctrines, it'd be best to turn those into subheaders with paragraphs. -Aaronshaf 16:02, 10 August 2006 (UTC)
