Discussion

I imported this article from Wikipedia and then edited out some of the content to make it a little more concise and appropriate for Theopedia. I felt like we needed our own article here which we could edit down rather than depend on the continuing secular evolution typical of most wikipedia articles.

However, it still seems like it is more than we need here in Theopedia, so feel free to strive for another level of brevity. :-) Gomarus 14:32, 6 Sep 2005 (EDT)

My opinion is that under the Beliefs section to leave the Baptist acronym and remove all but the "Two Ordinances" section. The rest could be summed up in a paragraph. Emphasis should be on the unity of beliefs held within the Baptist denomination, however room should be given to distinctions more so than spelling out the rest of the beliefs that are commonly held in most Christian denominations. Just a thought. JordanBarrett 19:19, 6 Sep 2005 (EDT)

The article looks great! You definitely have been blessed with skills in editing and rewording articles. ;) JordanBarrett 11:21, 7 Sep 2005 (EDT)

Recent Revert

The wholesale replacement of a Theopedia article with a Wikipedia "Baptist" article is not appreciated and was reverted for the following reasons.

  • No reasons were given for doing so.
  • No reference to the fact that it was Wikipedia material.
  • No regard for the number of dead (and inappropriate) links which were thus created.
  • No regard for the fact that the article had undergone development and discussion in Theopedia.
  • No regard for the differences between Theopedia and Wikipedia scope or perspectives.
  • Major changes without reading (or ignoring) "How to Contribute," or other Theopedia guides.

Revert 3-9-06

I reverted the edit because the edits did not improve the article. Rather, they put a slant to the article that was/is not in accord with Theopedia's vision or writing guide. JordanBarrett (talk) 19:53, 9 March 2006 (EST)

Suggested skeleton

I'm envisioning each of the following as short sections leading to a main page. I'm not terribly good with Baptist History, but here are some suggestions: --Alex Woehr 12:22, 6 June 2007 (UTC)

  1. Early baptist history
    1. Anabaptists
    2. Particular baptists
    3. General baptists
  2. Hypercalvinism in the 19th century (I know that Spurgeon had a lot of trouble with hypercalvinism)
  3. Recent developments, including charismatic/ecumenical influences
    1. Southern Baptists
    2. GARBC
  • Add something about missionaries (Carey, Judson)
  • Somewhere, add information about how baptists went from being one of the least to one of the most populous denominations. --Alex Woehr 12:22, 6 June 2007 (UTC)
That looks good, but I will warn you: you'll have a difficult time (maybe I'm flat-wrong) convincing some others here (including myself) that Spurgeon was a "hyper-calvinist."  ;) Jordan Barrett (talk) 18:38, 6 June 2007 (UTC)
Oops. <slaps forehead> Thanks for giving me an opportunity to clarify. I meant that Spurgeon had a rough time with hypercalvinists. I don't think that Spurgeon was a hypercalvinist, not that I am an expert on him. --Alex Woehr 18:50, 6 June 2007 (UTC)
Ah, that makes much more sense. Thanks for clarifying. ;) Jordan Barrett (talk) 22:22, 6 June 2007 (UTC)
