Confession of sin, the first step in repentance, is an admission to God and often to a brother or sister in Christ, that one has sinned — behaved in a way that is displeasing to the Lord. It is an important part of the repentance cycle that characterizes the healthy Christian life. When Jesus taught his disciples to pray, his brief prayer included a brief confession "forgive us our sins."
James encourages us to weave confession into our fellowship with other Christians:
- "Therefore, confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed" James 5:16
John explains the benefits of confession as follows:
- "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." 1 John 1:9
